비즈니스 영어, 뒷담화에도 스킬이 필요하다! : I thought it was interesting!

국내 비즈니스나 글로벌 비즈니스나 직장 생활에서 ‘뒷담화’는 필수인가요. 다국적 기업 및 글로벌 비즈니스에 종사하는 분들 또한 본의 아니게 ‘뒷담화’에 낄 때가 있습니다. 동료들의 뒷담화에 적극적으로 끼기에는 부담스럽고, 그렇다고 아예 못 들은 척하자니 동료들과의 관계가 걱정될 수 있죠. 그럴 땐 어느 정도로 얘기하면 좋을까요? 글로벌 기업 언스트앤영의 이사로 재직 중인 『월스트리트 비즈니스 영어회화』저자 이정희의 노하우 알려드립니다. <편집자 주>

업무 실적 관련 회의 후에 사장이 한 말에 대해 뒷담화하는 장면

Mark : What did you think about what the Big boss said?

Chul Soo : I thought it was interesting how he framed that “we weren’t delivering the results.”

Mark : I think the word “interesting” is an understatement.

Chul Soo : Well, I believe you know exactly what I mean by “interesting.”

Mark : Regardless, he has us what’s keeping him up at night.

Chul Soo : Well, I believe he made a strong argument for what he sees.

동료들의 뒷담화를 못 들은 척하자니 반발을 살 것 같고 그렇다고 거기에 끼자니 안 좋은 상황을 불러올 것 같습니다. 이럴 때에는 같이 험담을 하기보다 “흥미로웠다.” 정도의 표현을 쓰는 게 정치적으로 도움이 됩니다. 즉 “I thought it was interesting.”이라고 말하면 됩니다. 험담을 한 것은 아니지만 동의하는 뉘앙스를 풍기게 됩니다.

 

이상한 성격의 직장 동료에 대해 다른 이들이 한마디씩 할 때

John : Oh man, this guy shows up late for meetings, dresses like a bum and is very difficult to deal with.

Jane : He would be very particular about what he wants when we go to restaurants and we had to wait for him like 30 minutes to get his orders right.

ChulSoo : Who are you talking about? Francis?

Jane : Yes. You worked with him?

Chul Soo : Yes. I think he is an “interesting” person, in quotation.

Jane : You can say that again.

직장 동료들과 뒷담화를 할 때에도 interesting은 여러모로 유용한 표현입니다. I think he is an “interesting” person.으로 표현하면 “제 생각에 그는 참 ‘흥미로운’ 사람 같습니다.” 정도의 부드러운 표현이 됩니다.
